Affiliate Disclosure
Every walk link here carries a referral code, whether it points to GuruWalk or, for one Fener and Balat walk, to freetour.com. The code changes nothing for you: reserving a spot is free, and the tip you choose goes to the guide who walked you through the city. No guide, tour company or operator has paid to appear here, and none ever will. Independent guides like Haktan or KubrandYunusguides are here for their walks, nothing else.
How The Money Works
Links to the walks lead to GuruWalk, a platform this site does not run, plus a single Fener and Balat walk that sits on freetour.com. Each link carries a referral code, so when a visitor reserves a free spot and later tips the guide, the platform pays this site a small share of that tip. Reserving costs nothing, so the code adds nothing to what anyone pays. Guides set their own routes, their own schedules and their own style, and this site has no hand in any of it.
Beyond the walks, the only affiliate links are the three homepage Where to Stay hotels and a few budget-travel links: hostels, airport transfers, luggage storage and eSIMs. When one is used, the provider pays this site a commission from its own margin, and the price is the same as booking without the link. Nothing else earns a kurus here: no display ads, no sponsored posts, no paid placements, and no link points to a paid tour platform. Any new revenue stream would be disclosed on this page first.
The 34 walks in the free walking tours directory are pay-what-you-want tours run by independent local guides on GuruWalk, plus one walk exclusive to freetour.com. This site runs none of them. Directory links carry referral codes, and a code never changes what a walker pays or tips a guide. There are no display ads, no sponsored posts and no paid placements here, and any future revenue stream would be disclosed on this page and in the footer first.
Istanbul Sights That Earn Nothing Here
Plenty of Istanbul costs this site nothing. Crossing the Galata Bridge on foot, getting lost in Fener's painted streets, or watching the ferries churn past Eminönü all happen without paying anyone, and none of it earns a referral. Topkapı Palace is different: it sells a combined ticket to visitors, and this site says so plainly rather than blurring the line. The only links here that could pay are the free walking tours in the directory.
This site passes the platforms' figures on as published, without rounding or smoothing. The most-reviewed walk on the roster carries 4,927 GuruWalk reviews; another holds three. Ratings run from 2.33 to 5, and nothing here narrows that spread to look tidier. A walk with no reviews yet is written up in exactly those words, not dressed up.
What No Money Buys Here
- How a walk qualifies. A walk must be real and bookable, pay what you want, and be run by an independent local guide on GuruWalk or, in one case, freetour.com. Ratings and review counts appear exactly as the platform publishes them. That test produced 34 free walks across two platforms in six categories.
- No one buys a ranking. Walk order within each category follows the platforms' own ratings and review totals. A guide cannot pay to move up, and no guide has offered. Where a walk sits reflects its guide's work and the feedback walkers leave, not what money would prefer.
- Big and small alike. A walk rated 4.94 across 2,735 GuruWalk reviews sits in the same lineup as one rated 5 across five, each printed exactly as GuruWalk carries it. A walk with no reviews yet shows no rating at all, rather than one invented to fill the gap.
- No hidden entry costs. Reserving is free, and each guide is paid by the tip you choose at the end. Where a walk's title promises an included ferry or a rooftop tea, that is part of the walk, not an extra charge. Any separate out-of-pocket cost would be stated plainly in the description.
- Things we earn nothing from. The Galata Bridge crossed on foot, Balat's painted streets wandered alone, the ferries watched from Eminönü. None of these pay this site a kurus, and they still get their say whenever they beat a guided walk.
Figures We Pass On
Each walk's figures come straight from its own GuruWalk page, never averaged, rounded up or guessed. The roster's low mark is 2.33 across 3 GuruWalk reviews; its high is 5 across 5. Both appear exactly as the platform reports them, however unflattering the small ones look.
No price comparison exists because the guiding itself costs nothing to reserve. Every walk is pay what you want: you take a free spot and tip the guide whatever the walk was worth. Durations, ratings and review counts come from each guide's page on GuruWalk or freetour.com, and they run from 1 hour 15 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes.
Skip Us And Book Direct
Nothing here has to be booked through this site. Every walk is a pay-what-you-want tour listed on GuruWalk or freetour.com, so a walker can type the title straight into the platform, reserve with the guide who runs it, and land the exact same free spot. The FAQ and the guides work just as well with no link ever clicked.
A question sent now costs less than a shut gate later. The contact page takes queries about any walk, guide, rating or free-entry rule, and the about page spells out where each figure on this site comes from. Ask first, then reserve.
